Abstract:

The collection consists of Echo Lakes cabin owner files (arranged alphabetically by surname), Ralph King's general correspondence (arranged chronologically), and other materials relating to the Echo Lakes area and its residents, including files on the Highway 50 Association, the Echo Lake Association, and the California Alpine Club. The cabin owner files include correspondence and leases relating to cabin purchases or rentals. Materials in the collection date from circa 1930 to 1984.

Ralph King was born in 1902 in Hudson, Ohio. In 1908, the family moved to California, where Ralph's father pursued various careers, including horse breeder and trainer, rancher, carpenter, and Methodist lay minister. Ralph worked from an early age, putting himself through school at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned BA and MA degrees. King first came to Echo in 1925 to work at Kleeberger Camp. In 1928, he took over the Echo boat service, which he operated until 1942. He pursued real estate and other interests at Echo Portals from 1936 until his death in 1984.
